Tips + Tricks for Everything Web Design, SEO + Copywriting for Your  Biz

Why this web designer includes a free legal page with every web design or template.

As a web designer primarily collaborating with small business owners and creatives, many of my design and copywriting clients come to me without realizing that their current site is missing a crucial, must-have page on their current website. What is it? Your legal page – which typically includes a privacy policy and your terms and conditions.

No clue what these are? Keep reading.

What is a privacy policy?

A privacy policy explains how the website (or rather the business behind it) gathers, stores, uses, and perhaps most importantly, protects any personal data that it collects from website visitors. This is especially important to have for your website if you plan to gather information like a first name, email, or birthday, etc – even if it’s just for a newsletter sign-up.

Why your website needs a privacy policy.

Your website should include a privacy policy so that website users can feel confident and comfortable providing you with personal information (and legally – they have a right to know why you are gathering it, and what you plan to do with it). If you’re going to collect any personal data – you must have a privacy policy – to protect both you and your website visitors.

The benefits of a privacy policy.

A privacy policy is more likely to make consumers feel safe on your website. And as previously mentioned, it acts as a protection for both your business and your potential clients and customers visiting your website.

Where to put a privacy policy on your website.

Your privacy policy should be easily accessible – from every single page of your website. Typically you will find businesses including a link to it in their footer. Don’t forget to make sure it is visible and accessible on both desktop and mobile versions of your website.

Where to find one.

There are a wide variety of companies that offer templates for writing your own website privacy policy. Depending on the type of work you’re in, you may benefit from consulting with a lawyer. A few places you could check out for finding a privacy policy include: Rocket Lawyer, Plug and Law, and Artful Contracts. (Not affiliate links, just a few I’m familiar with).
